Things to Do in Fort Qu'Appelle (click here for printable version) Fish Culture Station Located five kilometres East of Fort Qu'Appelle on Highway 210, the Fish Culture Station is open to the public from May 1 st until Labour Day. At the culture station you can visit the information centre, watch information videos, take a tour of the premises, feed the fish, and speak to fish culture specialists. At the Fish Culture Station, 60 million fish are reared each year. Although the Station has the capability to rear a fish through its entire life cycle, often the fish are released before their adult stage in order to finish growing in the wild. The best time to visit the Culture Station is between May and June when the fish eggs are being incubated. The Information Centre is open from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-4p.m., seven days a week. The southern section, where Stop 2 is located, has a group campfire pit and a demonstration teepee available for groups to use. The northwest section has a beach, picnic facilities, and a boat launch. The northeast section provides space for group camping and is available for school groups during the spring and fall. At the Visitor Centre there is plenty of useful information regarding the area, including natural and geological history. There is a self-guided Interpretive Nature Trail, approximately 3 km in length, and another self-guided hike just west of the Visitor Centre. Both these hikes are found in picture format on this site. There is also playground equipment, volleyball courts, a baseball diamond, a mini-golf course, and a canoe (or small watercraft) launch for visitors to use with their admission to the park. Park Campground Office (306) 332-3224 Other Great Places to Visit Fort Qu'Appelle Museum A great resource for local social history, the Fort Qu'Appelle museum has artifacts used by Aboriginals and European Settlers. It also has on its premises the small trading post built by the Hudson Bay Company in 1865, and an original x-ray machine from the Fort San Tuberculosis Sanatorium. The Observatory is open to the public in spring from May 10 to 31, and in fall from August 1 to September 30. Daily hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. |
