Smooth wild strawberry
Fragaria virginiana Dcne.
Plant Description:
- Creeping herb that grows in moist depressions on the Prairies and in moist open-woodlands
- Leaflets are coarsely toothed
- White flowers; fruits are reddish and almost round - much smaller than those grown commercially
- Strawberry Tea was used for curing insanity and as a wash for skin problems
- Wilting leaves are poisonous, but are safe when dried
- Fruit is used in jam, jellies and pastries
- Found at Stop 1- on the Interpretive Nature and Hiking Trails
