American elm
Ulmus americana L.
Plant Description:
- Tall tree with reddish bark
- Tree looks umbrella shaped
- Strongly veined oval leaves with toothed edges
- Fruit is winged
- Occurs in the open-forests
- Dutch Elm Disease has killed many elms
- The decomposing leaves are high in potassium and calcium and improve the soil around the tree
- Found at Stops 1, 2, 6, and 8
