Slide 36:

Those, which spin large, circular nets, are called orb-weavers. They include some of our largest spiders, and are common in woodlands, and around home and gardens.

This large orb-weaver illustrates many spider characteristics. There are four pairs of jointed walking legs. The pedipalps are like small legs on either side of the head, and are used as feelers. Spiders have well-developed eyes - usually eight of them. The body has two major divisions: a fused head and thorax, and a large abdomen. Here we can see a strand of silk issuing from the abdominal silk glands.
