The outstanding ability of spiders is their ability to spin silk. Many species construct complex webs for the purpose of capturing prey. The silk is produced in a set of glands located near the tip of the abdomen. It is a protein substance which becomes hard, not by drying, but by being drawn out and stretched. Spiders use silk in a variety of ways, with many families being characterized by the type of web they build.
