The most familiar of the chelicerate arthropods are the spiders. Their chelicerae are fangs equipped with poison glands. With very few exceptions, like the black widow shown here, spiders are harmless to man. This one, with an egg case, we found in the entrance of a ground squirrel burrow in southern Saskatchewan. The red hourglass marking beneath the abdomen is distinctive of the black widow.
