Slide 50:

An interesting relative of the fairy shrimp is less common. Tadpole shrimp have a broad, turtle-like carapace and two long thread-like appendages at the end of the abdomen. These animals are usually found in shallow, temporary ponds on the prairie, and sometimes in small lakes where there are no fish to prey on them. Tadpole shrimp paddle along the bottom by using leaf-like appendages beneath the carapace. They gather detritus particles for food. As with fairy shrimp, they tend to disappear as the water warms in summer.
