Typha latifolia L.

 

Plant Description:

  • Frequently seen marsh plants growing up to 3 m tall
  • Young flower spikes (which resemble corn-dogs) can be eaten
  • Pollen can be mixed with flour for making muffins, biscuits, pancakes
  • Female flowers can be cooked and eaten like corn on the cob
  • Caution - cattails can be mistaken for poisonous irises
  • Found at Stops 3, 6 and 12
