You will be going on a math scavenger hunt in your school and around the school premises. It will likely take about one hour to complete this Math Trail. You will be assigned to a group of eight students and one leader. Your group will start at a certain number on the Math Trail, it may not be number one on the trail. If your group starts at station #5 you will complete question #5 and then continue (as a group) to the next station, #6 then #7 and so on. You can write your answers on this handout, but if you need more space just write on the back of the pages.

Remember to stay with your group and be quiet in the halls as other classes are still working in their rooms. Do not cross the street unless all of your group and its leader are going together.

Some of the mathematics might be challenging for you while some you may find easy. Ask others in your group if you do not understand a question. Work cooperatively as a team to accomplish goals and problems, and to overcome challenges.

Good Luck and Have Fun!!!

Station 1: Our Classroom

Check out the big blue bulletin board in the classroom with the happy face border.

A.Are all of the happy faces the same?___________________
B.If not, how many variations (differences) are there of faces?_________________
C.Can you write this pattern using letters (ie. AABBC...) starting from the top right hand corner to the bottom, moving vertically._____________________________
D.Can you find any other patterns in the room? Name one that you see, use pictures and letters to represent the pattern.

Station 2: The Hallway

Start in the doorway of the hall between the staff room and the office, walk quietly to the end of the hall towards classroom 'e' while counting your steps on the way. Record the number of steps that it took you.__________________________

A.Estimate how many steps it would take to walk around the square of the four hallways if each hall is equal in length.

B.Estimate how many steps it would take your leader to walk the same hallway._________________________
Get your leader to actually walk the length. Was your guess correct?__________________________________________

C.Measure 1 meter of the hallway. Approximately how many of your steps fit in a meter?_________________________

Station 3:Grade 8 History

There is a set of grade eight award plaques hung on the wall across from the office.

A.What is the oldest date (year) on the plaques?____________

B.What is the most recent date?__________________

C.How many years are there between the earliest and the most recent dates, including these two dates._________________________

D.If someone in grade 8 was 13 in November of 1991, how old would they be now, assuming that their birthday was October 13th? ________________________________________________
What year was this person born in?____________________

Station 4: The Heart Quilt

Also in this main hallway is a beautiful quilt with colored hearts on it made by the grade 4/5 class of 1998. See that there are four main colors: pink, purple, blue and green. If we were to lay the quilt on the floor and toss a button onto it, which color do you think that it would most likely land on. Why do you think that this would be so?

A.How many hearts are there all together?____________________
Using fractions show how many chances out of that number that you would have to land on a...
Green heart_________________________________________

Purple heart_________________________________________

Pink heart __________________________________________

Yellow heart_________________________________________

Blue heart__________________________________________
Beside each fraction write which of the following terms best describes the probability of what you think the chances of landing on these colors would be: certain, very likely, likely, not likely, impossible

Station 5: Doorway

Go to the doorway of the entrance into the boot rack by the computer room.

A.Using a measuring tape, measure the height of the doorway. _________cm

B.Get a partner to measure you head to toe.___________cm. If you grew 125cm would you still fit under the doorway?___________________

C.Could you and your partner fit if he/she were standing on your shoulders? ____________

Now, figure out how high you and your partner would really be if he/she stood on your shoulders, remember, you need to subtract the height of your head and neck because your partner is on your shoulders, not your head. Would you still fit through the door?___________________________________

Station 6: Play Structure

Go and look at the wooden play structure and the metal climbing structure, notice how many different shapes there are. Do you see any parallel lines? Are there any other shapes in the play structure? Draw four other shapes that you can see and name them .

Can you see a hexagon? ____________

Can you see an octagon? _____________

Can you see a parallelogram?________________

Station 7: Leaves

There is a stand of trees on the other side of the fence behind the backstop. Notice that there are many fallen leaves all of different shapes, colors and sizes lying around. Collect a variety of 10 leaves. Using a crayon (or pencil), make a leaf rubbing of three of your leaves.

A.Examine the leaf rubbings, are any of them symmetrical?_______________________

B.Using your ten leaves, make a fraction to show how many of the ten are...

-red leaves?______________ -green leaves?_________

-brown leaves?____________ -bigger than figure a)?__________

Figure a)

Station 8: Twenty-four Hour Clock

As you walk down Arens Road you will see a street sign with the following time on it: 0800-2200.

A.What is this time according to a regular twelve hour clock?____________________________

B.How long of a time is this?______________________________

C.If it was 1300, what time would it be on a twelve hour clock?______________

Station 9: Car Counting

Stand on the sidewalk at the intersection of Arens Road and Helmsing Street. For four minutes watch the cars that drive by. Notice the different colors of the vehicles and record them in the chart below.
Red Black Green White Blue Grey Other

Now you can analyze the data you have collected and fill in this bar graph with your findings.

What color was the most common?_________________

What color was the least common?_________________

Station 10: House Number

Look at #2703 Helmsing Street, across from the main entrance of the school. This is a very unusual house, do you think that more than one family lives here? What clues did you use to decide? __________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________

If you drew a line down the center of the house vertically, would the two halves be symmetrical? ____________________________________

The house number is 2703, can you determine the place value of each underlined number?

2703 _________________________

2703__________________________

2703 _________________________

2703 _________________________

Can you write this number in words? ___________________________________________________________
